DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the Red Deer River Naturalists September Monthly Meeting Speaker Series\n\n\nSpeaker: Michelle Hoang\n\n\nTopic: Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Coastal Wolves Across the British Columbia-Alaska Border\n\n\nWhen: September 24\, 2026 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.\n\n\nWhere: Held at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre\, 6300 45 Ave\, Red Deer\, AB T4N 3M4\, in the Theatre room.\n\n\n\n\n\nMichelle Hoang is a Master’s student at the University of Alberta in the Boyce Lab. She is studying population genetics of coastal wolves in Northern British Columbia and Southeastern Alaska. Michelle also works as a Resource Management Officer at Elk Island National Park\, as part of the Wildlife Active Management team. She recently led a wildlife road mortality study and continues to contribute to wild boar management\, carnivore connectivity\, elk population demography and human-wildlife conflict projects. Outside of work and research\, Michelle enjoys climbing\, cycling\, hiking and photography. She resides in Edmonton\, Alberta\, with her partner\, 3 cats\, a dog and a turtle.

SUMMARY:Bird Focus Group Walk
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Group Walk \nLocation: Maskepetoon Park – located in the subdivision of Oriole Park West. \nMeet: In the fitness park parking lot of Kerry Wood Drive/Oak Drive. Parking lot is on the west side of Kerry Wood Drive/Oak Drive. \nWhen: September 26\, 2026 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. \nGuest Host: Ron Bjorge \nAll are welcome\, you do not have to be a RDRN member to attend. We’re an inclusive group that learns from each other\, and birders of all skill levels are welcome! \nBring your binoculars* and camera/phone. Carry water\, energy snack\, rain gear and a hat as required by conditions. Dress in layers and wear sturdy hiking footwear\, water resistant and with ice cleats as required by the season. Some trails are on rough terrain. Distances vary\, but may be up to 5 kms. Let Ron know if you have any potential medical issues. RDRN has purchased a spotting scope and tripod. This will be a real asset for long distance observations. \n*RDRN have two birding binoculars that can be borrowed (first come\, first considered) by new participants.
