Wear sturdy hiking footwear\, some trails are on rough terrain. Carry water and an energy snack. Wear layers and carry rain gear and a hat as required by conditions. Distances vary\, but may be up to 5 kms. Let Chris know if you have any potential medical issues.\n\n\nRDRN has purchased a spotting scope and tripod. SUMMARY:Bird Focus Group Walk Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Group Field Trip\nLocation: Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park – The Dry Island Buffalo Jump outing is a full day outing. We meet at the day use area at 10:00 a.m.\, and we will set our route from there depending on moisture conditions. Note\, that the full walk leads around and back over the ‘Island’. It as an ‘intermediate’ hike\, and there will certainly be rough and steep portions. Wear good hikers and bring poles if you use them. The hike will take about 5 hours from the day use area\, so allow 6 hours overall (lunch and water along). If some people are hesitant about the steeper portions\, they can join us for the early stages along the river and then circle back to return by those same trails (the first 2-3 km).\nWhen: September 12\, 2026 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\nHost: Chris Olsen\nAll are welcome\, you do not have to be a RDRN member to attend. DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the Red Deer River Naturalists September Monthly Meeting Speaker Series\n\n\nSpeaker: Michelle Hoang\n\n\nTopic: Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Coastal Wolves Across the British Columbia-Alaska Border\n\n\nWhen: September 24\, 2026 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.\n\n\nWhere: Held at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre\, 6300 45 Ave\, Red Deer\, AB T4N 3M4\, in the Theatre room.\n\n\n\n\n\nMichelle Hoang is a Master’s student at the University of Alberta in the Boyce Lab. She is studying population genetics of coastal wolves in Northern British Columbia and Southeastern Alaska. Michelle also works as a Resource Management Officer at Elk Island National Park\, as part of the Wildlife Active Management team. She recently led a wildlife road mortality study and continues to contribute to wild boar management\, carnivore connectivity\, elk population demography and human-wildlife conflict projects. Outside of work and research\, Michelle enjoys climbing\, cycling\, hiking and photography. She resides in Edmonton\, Alberta\, with her partner\, 3 cats\, a dog and a turtle.

DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Group Walk \nLocation: Nova Chemicals Community Nature Trail \nMeet: Before you visit you can get a detailed map showing how to get there\, and learn more about the area and visitor guidelines: https://www.novachem.com/wp-content/uploads/Legacy-fact-sheet-1.pdf \nThe Community Nature Trail is located within easy driving distance of many Central Alberta communities: just southwest of the Hamlet of Joffre on Township Rd 390. Directions from Red Deer\, travel east on Highway 11 and turn left onto highway 815. Proceed to Range Road 390 and turn left. It’s a short distance and you will see a sign. All recreational users must sign in before using the trail and sign out before leaving. A box to the right of the entrance sign contains the register. Industry in the area regularly tests safety sirens. If you hear an alarm or siren when you are there\, please call the NOVA Chemicals number before using the trails.
