DESCRIPTION:Our Host Chris Olsen has booked the Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Group Walk to join the Wainwright Wildlife Society (WWS) in their annual Sharp-tailed Grouse Tour on April 26\, 2025.  WWS set comfortable blinds on a lek site. The birds come in the pre-dawn to display to potential mates\, and it is truly amazing to witness the strutting\, posturing\, rattling and even aggression in the dawn light. Dancing at this very site was recently filmed and shown on the Nature of Things. Go to CBC GEM and search the Nature of Things; look for a 3-part documentary titled the ‘Secret World of Sound’. The segment that includes Sharp-tailed Grouse on this lek is in part 2\, ‘Love and Rivals’.  \nPre-registration is required contact olsencdel@gmail.com to participate. Deadline for registering is April 5\, 2025. Chris has reserved 15 seats for $35 adults\, $15 students (cash) to support the WWS – bring exact change. We are full but you can be added to a waitlist. This outing will meet at a parking lot (tba) in Wainwright and depart for the lek at 4:00 a.m. sharp. Plan to be in the blinds until about 8:00 a.m.\, dress in warm layers\, and bring a hot thermos and a snack. If you are unfamiliar with this spectacle\, you will be amazed! If you wish to attend on your own on a different date the WWS runs this Sharp-tailed Grouse Watch from mid April to mid May. See www.facebook.com/WainwrightWildlifeSociety for details and more information about the tour. \nThe Tofield Snow Goose Festival also runs the weekend of April 26-27\, 2025\, based on offerings of years’ past\, there is a ‘bird festival’ site in the Town and guided bus excursions with a biologist or interpreter to area wetlands. You can expect to see very large aggregations of Snow Geese and other migrating waterfowl and shore birds. Two or three hour bus tour options\, tickets go on sale March 4\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Nature Central/RDRN will be hosting a family-friendly winter walk at Burns Nature Park on Saturday\, December 28\, 2024\, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Dress warmly for the winter weather\, as the event will take place regardless of snow. Note: The walk may be canceled if temperatures drop below -15°C. While registration is encouraged\, you do not need to be a member of RDRN to participate.  \nPlease email nir.rdrn.nature@gmail.com to confirm your attendance.  \nDirections: The park can be accessed from the west end of Township Rd 394\, located west of Hwy 20 on the east side of Sylvan Lake. Burns Nature Park is a 20-acre sanctuary on the east side of Sylvan Lake in Lacombe County. The park\, donated by the Burns family in 2023\, features about two kilometers of hiking trails through poplar forests\, wetlands\, and along the shoreline\, offering views of the lake. Visitors can enjoy benches along the trails\, interpretive signs\, and a small parking area with restrooms.

DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the RDRN November Monthly Meeting Speaker Series \nSpeaker: Sandra MacDougall \nTopic: Recolonizing Black Bears in the Beaver Hills Biosphere \nWhen: November 28\, 2024 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. \nWhere: Held at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre\, 6300 45 Ave\, Red Deer\, AB T4N 3M4\, in the Theatre room. \nOver the past several years\, the black bear population has been steadily increasing in Elk Island National Park and the surrounding Beaver Hills Biosphere. Bears were once a common resident of the area and are now returning to their previously occupied landscapes which are now highly modified. Sandra will summarize her study about the feeding ecology of this bear population and will offer considerations for human-wildlife coexistence. \nSandra MacDougall has been a biology instructor at Red Deer Polytechnic since 1995. She worked on grizzly and black bear populations in Canada’s north for over two decades\, conducted a three-year grizzly bear food habit\, habitat use and human-bear interactions research study in Nahanni National Park Reserve\, and has collaborated with Parks Canada and the US National Parks Service to conduct field hazard assessments and analyze human-bear conflicts in other northern parks. \nAll are welcome\, you do not have to be a RDRN member to attend.

DESCRIPTION:Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Group Walk \nLocation: Bower Woods \nMeet: In the green space across from 37 Selkirk Boulevard \nWhen: November 23\, 2024 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. \nHost: Chris Olsen \nAll are welcome\, you do not have to be a RDRN member to attend. We’re an inclusive group that learns from each other\, and birders of all skill levels are welcome! \nBring your binoculars* and camera/phone. Carry water and an energy snack. Dress in layers and wear sturdy hiking footwear\, water resistant and with ice cleats as required by the season. Some trails are on rough terrain. Distances vary\, but may be up to 5 kms. Let Chris know if you have any potential medical issues. \n*RDRN have two birding binoculars that can be borrowed (first come\, first served) by new participants.
