SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the Red Deer River Naturalists October Monthly Meeting Speaker Series\nSpeaker: Mark Powers\nTopic: Albertosaurus and the Great Tyrannosaur “Family”\nWhen: October 22\, 2026 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.\nWhere: Held at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre\, 6300 45 Ave\, Red Deer\, AB T4N 3M4\, in the Theatre room.\nMark Powers began his academic journey at Red Deer Polytechnic (formerly Red Deer College). He earned a BSc specializing in palaeontology at the University of Alberta\, followed by an MSc with Dr. Philip Currie. He then completed a PhD with Dr. Michael Caldwell on snake evolution during and after the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. While pursuing his doctorate\, he continued researching dinosaurs and collaborated internationally to revise Tyrannosaur systematics. This work led to the recognition of at least three new Tyrannosaur species\, including a new Albertosaurus. Related fieldwork drew the BBC to Powers and his colleagues\, and the life of a newly discovered Albertosaurus specimen was brought to the screen in Walking with Dinosaurs (2025). \nMark Powers with Cast of new Tyrannosaur species

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the Red Deer River Naturalists November Monthly Meeting Speaker Series \nSpeaker: Milan Baral \nTopic: Between Cliffs and Carcasses: The Ecology of Egyptian Vultures in Nepal \nWhen: November 26\, 2026 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. \nWhere: Held at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre\, 6300 45 Ave\, Red Deer\, AB T4N 3M4\, in the Theatre room. \nEgyptian Vultures are among the world’s most remarkable yet threatened scavenging birds. Drawing on field research in Nepal\, this presentation explores how Egyptian Vultures select roosting sites\, use food resources and interact with a changing environment. Through field observations\, photographs and research findings\, the talk will highlight these birds’ fascinating behaviour\, ecological importance and the conservation challenges they face in human-dominated landscapes. \nMilan Baral is a wildlife biologist and researcher who recently completed his Master of Science in Biological Sciences at the University of Lethbridge. His research focuses on avian ecology\, behaviour\, conservation and population genetics. He is especially interested in understanding how birds respond to environmental change and human-modified landscapes. \nWe will also welcome Ed Karpuk who will unveil the new improved Nature Central website Story Map. \nAll are welcome\, you do not have to be a RDRN member to attend.
