SUMMARY:Bird Focus Group Walk Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Our Host Chris Olsen has booked the Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Group Walk to join the Wainwright Wildlife Society (WWS) in their annual Sharp-tailed Grouse Watch. They set comfortable blinds on a lek site near Czar\, Alberta and Chris has taken students there for many years. The birds come in the pre-dawn to display to potential mates\, and it is truly amazing to witness the strutting\, posturing\, rattling and even aggression in the dawn light. Bring your camera!\n\nPre-registration is required contact olsencdel@gmail.com if you wish to participate. We will meet our guides at 4:00 a.m. and will be out for about 3 hours. Likely\, this is an overnight trip for most\, and there is a $35.00 (cash) charge to support the WWS. We have space reserved for now\, but Chris will need firm numbers by March 31\, 2023 (there is lots of demand for attendance). If you wish to attend on your own on a different date the WWS runs this Sharp-tailed Grouse Watch from mid April to mid May. See their Facebook page for details and more information about the Watch.\n\n\n\nThe Tofield Snow Goose Festival also runs the weekend of April 22-23\, 2023. based on offerings of years’ past\, there is a ‘bird festival’ site in the Town and guided bus excursions with a biologist or interpreter to area wetlands. You can expect to see very large aggregations of Snow Geese and other migrating waterfowl and shore birds. 2 or 3 hour bus tour options – tickets go on Sale March 23\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Field Trip\n \n\n\nLocation: Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park \nDry Island Trip Details: This is a longer walk during a combined birding and paleontology field trip. Expect to see a lot of fossils with Tim Schowalter along as our guide\, and with luck we’ll also get some migrating raptors. We meet at the overlook at 10:00 a.m. and will set our route from there depending on moisture conditions. Note\, that the full walk leads around and back over the ‘Island’. Tim describes it as an ‘intermediate’ hike\, and there will certainly be rough and steep portions. Wear good hikers and bring poles if you use them. The hike will take about four hours from the day use area\, so allow five hours overall (your own lunch and water along). Besides the vultures\, some of the highlights of the trip might be Brown Thrasher\, Great Horned Owl\, Mountain Bluebird\, Cliff Swallow\, White-faced Ibis.  \nCome out for a day or the weekend. You have two ways to participate in this trip:  \n1. Go out on Saturday and meet at 10:00 a.m. and spend the day\, bring your own lunch and drinks. DESCRIPTION:Bjorge Farm Tour in the Battle River Valley.  \nExplore the beautiful Battle River Valley June 22 and 23\, 2019\n \nLocation: Meet at the Ferry Point Campground near Meeting Creek 10:00 a.m. We will carpool from Red Deer\n \nThis trip will involve a three-hour easy to medium hike through the Battle River Hills\, and a stop at the old homestead of the Bjorge’s to check for Turkey Vultures. Besides the vultures\, some of the highlights of the trip might be Brown Thrasher\, Great Horned Owl\, Mountain Bluebird\, Cliff Swallow. \nCome out for a day or the weekend. You have two ways to participate in this trip: 1. Go out on Saturday and meet at 10:00 a.m. and spend the day. Also you can camp overnight at the Ferry Point Campground\, south of the Battle River bridge on Range Road 184. (Some tents will be available if you don’t have your own.) Bring your own food and sleeping gear. There is a minimal charge for the campsite. On Saturday night there will be a pot luck supper. 2.
