DESCRIPTION:Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Group Field Trip \nLocation: Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park – The Dry Island Buffalo Jump outing is a full day outing. We meet at the overlook at 10:00 a.m.\, and we will set our route from there depending on moisture conditions. Note\, that the full walk leads around and back over the ‘Island’. It as an ‘intermediate’ hike\, and there will certainly be rough and steep portions. Wear good hikers and bring poles if you use them. The hike will take about 5 hours from the day use area\, so allow 6 hours overall (lunch and water along). DESCRIPTION:Nature Central/RDRN will be hosting a family-friendly winter walk at Burns Nature Park on Saturday\, December 28\, 2024\, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Dress warmly for the winter weather\, as the event will take place regardless of snow. Note: The walk may be canceled if temperatures drop below -15°C. While registration is encouraged\, you do not need to be a member of RDRN to participate.  \nPlease email nir.rdrn.nature@gmail.com to confirm your attendance.  \nDirections: The park can be accessed from the west end of Township Rd 394\, located west of Hwy 20 on the east side of Sylvan Lake. Burns Nature Park is a 20-acre sanctuary on the east side of Sylvan Lake in Lacombe County. The park\, donated by the Burns family in 2023\, features about two kilometers of hiking trails through poplar forests\, wetlands\, and along the shoreline\, offering views of the lake. Visitors can enjoy benches along the trails\, interpretive signs\, and a small parking area with restrooms.

DESCRIPTION:Our Host Chris Olsen has booked the Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Group Walk to join the Wainwright Wildlife Society (WWS) in their annual Sharp-tailed Grouse Tour on April 26\, 2025.  WWS set comfortable blinds on a lek site. The birds come in the pre-dawn to display to potential mates\, and it is truly amazing to witness the strutting\, posturing\, rattling and even aggression in the dawn light. Dancing at this very site was recently filmed and shown on the Nature of Things. Go to CBC GEM and search the Nature of Things; look for a 3-part documentary titled the ‘Secret World of Sound’. The segment that includes Sharp-tailed Grouse on this lek is in part 2\, ‘Love and Rivals’.  \nPre-registration is required contact olsencdel@gmail.com to participate. Deadline for registering is April 5\, 2025. Chris has reserved 15 seats for $35 adults\, $15 students (cash) to support the WWS – bring exact change. We are full but you can be added to a waitlist. This outing will meet at a parking lot (tba) in Wainwright and depart for the lek at 4:00 a.m. sharp. Plan to be in the blinds until about 8:00 a.m.\, dress in warm layers\, and bring a hot thermos and a snack. If you are unfamiliar with this spectacle\, you will be amazed! If you wish to attend on your own on a different date the WWS runs this Sharp-tailed Grouse Watch from mid April to mid May. You can expect to see very large aggregations of Snow Geese and other migrating waterfowl and shore birds. Two or three hour bus tour options\, tickets go on sale March 4\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the Red Deer River Naturalists Bird Focus Group Field Trip \nLocation: Medicine Lake Provincial Recreation Area (north of Rocky Mountain House on Hwy 22) see map\, best to use a mapping app on your phone as a guide if you have one. Cell phone service is poor at the campground\, but probably text msgs. will get through. \nHost: Chris Olsen \nWhen: June 14\, 2025 bird walk from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and paddling from 3:00 p.m. onward. \nMeet: Day use area/boat launch for both the birding walk and paddling. We may shuttle from there for the walk\, or simply hike back to the trail head. We’ll paddle the lake counter-clockwise\, and so people that want a short outing can see ‘water lily bay’ and do a short loop (about 2 kms) back to the launch. Those that are up for a longer paddle can continue along the far shore for as long as they like\, and eventually we’ll explore the mouth of the Medicine River and loop back to the boat launch (about 4 hrs). \nWhile Medicine Lake Rec. Area can be booked\, there are two non-reservable sites in each loop\, and those are usually available to access on-site if you are interested in camping\, first come first served. Chris will be camping June 13th to 15th\, \nAll are welcome\, you do not have to be a RDRN member to attend. DESCRIPTION:You are all invited to the Ferry Point Community Camp-out/Birding Field Trip \nExplore the beautiful Battle River Valley June 21 and 22\, 2025. \nLocation: Meet at the Ferry Point Campground near Meeting Creek @ 10:00 a.m. Range Rd 184 north of Twp Rd 434\, Rosalind\, AB T0B 3Y0 \nDuring the weekend\, we will visit several sites\, within the Battle River valley and surrounding uplands and wetlands to observe birds as well as flowers and other plants. Some years we observe more than 70 bird species; many are located close to the campground and Battle River. Some of the highlights of the trip might be Brown Thrasher\, Great Horned Owl\, Mountain Bluebird\, Cliff Swallow\, White-faced Ibis. Judy Boyd and others from the Red Deer River Naturalists will be joining us to share their knowledge and enthusiasm. Dale Leckie\, adjunct professor of Earth\, Energy\, and Environment at the University of Calgary\, will also be joining us to share his expertise throughout the day and into the evening. Following supper\, we will have a presentation from the Battle River watershed alliance. \nCome out for a day or the weekend. You have two ways to participate in this trip: \n\nGo out on Saturday and meet at 10:00 a.m. and spend the day\, bring your own lunch and drinks. Judy Boyd will be on hand to help identify species. Following an afternoon of birding\, burgers will be provided by the Red Deer River Naturalists and salads and deserts will be pot luck. Please bring an item to share.\nGo out on Sunday and meet at the campground at 10:00 a.m. bring your own lunch and drinks. We will travel to 1 or 2 sites to observe birds\, flowers and other wild plants. We will be wrapped up by about 1:30 or so.\nYou can camp (tents or trailers) overnight at the Ferry Point Campground\, south of the Battle River bridge on Range Road 184. $25.00/night. Enjoy light–moderate walking while observing winter ecology and wildlife tracks. Carry water and an energy snack. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a RDRN Nature Central Snowshoeing & Winter Hike Sunday\, January 25\, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. for a winter adventure at Kelly Ranches\, a Nature Conservancy of Canada protected area located about 40 km east of Red Deer.\n\nThe property features beautiful aspen parkland\, meadows and wetlands\, perfect for exploring in the snow.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhether we snowshoe (bring your own snowshoes) or take a winter walk will depend on Mother Nature\, but either way\, you’ll enjoy fresh air and beautiful scenery. If time allows\, we’ll make a short stop at a nearby protected area to observe minnows in open water.\n\n\n\nSpaces are limited\, so email nir.rdrn.nature@gmail.com to register and receive directions!\n\nBe sure to dress warmly for winter conditions\, bring water and an energy snack.
